Platinum Jubilee Beacons on Hadrian’s Wall

In a year of celebrations, two really stand out:  the 1900th anniversary of Hadrian’s Wall, and 70 years of The Queen’s reign. Both anniversaries will be celebrated throughout the year, but there is just one event that uniquely combines both occasions: The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacons.

As the first national community celebration of the extended bank holiday (Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th of June), over 1500 beacons will be lit across the UK, Commonwealth and beyond for the final time in Her Majesty’s reign. The Queen is the first British monarch to have reached this incredible milestone and the beacons will be lit in recognition of the service she has given over the last 70 years.

As part of this historic occasion, the Palace has approached Hadrian’s Wall to mark the occasion by lighting beacons across the communities living in and around our World Heritage Site. To this end, we have been granted special dispensation to light our beacons at 10pm on 2nd June, a full 15 minutes after the rest of the UK, in order to highlight the uniqueness of the contribution to be made by Hadrian’s Wall.

Everyone is welcome to join in with these celebrations, which is planned to range in size from private bonfires to full-blown spectaculars with fireworks, choirs, pipers, and buglers. Due to the later timing, you could even watch the rest of the country lighting their beacons on the television before heading out to light your own in unison with friends from across the Wall.
