Eating and Drinking

If you’re enjoying the Wall on foot or you’re cycling along its scenic trails, you’ll need to rest and refuel regularly. Or, you may simply be a foodie on the look-out for the tastiest treats Hadrian’s Wall Country has to offer! Either way, you won’t be disappointed. One of the most easterly culinary hotspots is the superb Lanercost Tearoom, which is located right beside 12th century Lanercost Priory itself and serves up a tempting array of delicacies, from lunches and snacks to cakes and hot drinks. Further west, on the Military road, close to Heddon-on-the-Wall, is Vallum Farm. Less a restaurant, more a food-focused community, Vallum Farm has tea rooms, an ice cream parlour and a ‘play paddock’ as well as a kitchen garden bursting with fresh herbs and vegetables. It’s also a great spot from which to set off on a woodland walk.

Those who enjoy good pub grub are well-catered for along the Wall. One of the best known boozers on the frontier is the Twice Brewed Inn, which is an excellent point from which to visit any of the attractions that punctuate the Wall’s central section. At this welcoming pub, diners tuck into hearty meals - expect chunky chips, handmade sausages, sharing platters, steaks, burgers and more. Another traditional inn, albeit one that introduces a fresh contemporary twist to its menu, isThe Samson Inn, Gilsland. This place is owned by three local farmers who are uncompromising on using quality, seasonal produce. The Samson Inn also has a well-stocked bar positively groaning with real ales and tempting ciders. Yet further east to Corbridge and The Errington Arms, a coaching house that dates back to the 1750s, is well worth a visit. As well as hearty evening meals, this pub is ideal for hungry walkers with its generously sized tasty sandwiches.  This selection of eateries gives only the smallest flavour of the culinary delights on offer the length and breadth of Hadrian’s Wall Country. Wherever you’re exploring, east or west, rural or urban, you’re sure to find a fabulous choice of places to eat.
