Due to the Covid19 crisis our excavations are taking place at a much smaller scale. There is still archaeology happening on site with our archaeologists who are happy to chat. Please check back or visit the Vindolanda Trust website for more information (Updated 4th August 2020)
The 2020 Vindolanda Roman Excavations will run Monday to Friday (weather permitting) from Monday 6th April until Friday 18th September. Watch history being uncovered at Europe's most exciting archaeological site.
In 2020 the team will be working inside the south western quadrant of the last stone fort, continuing from behind the site of the granaries and heading towards the southern fort wall. This area has never before been subjected to a modern excavation and it is hoped that the archaeological sequence will stretch from the 9th century to the 1st century. In 2020 a focus of the work will be on the end of Roman Vindolanda to the Post-Roman period of the 8th or 9th centuries.
We place our excavation fences as close to the action as we possibly can so you can see our discoveries as we make them.
