Accommodation in Northumberland

For those looking to stay close to Hadrian’s Wall itself and the various Roman monuments that stand along its central stretch, there’s a cluster of wonderful towns and villages to choose from. Chollerford, Haltwhistle, Bardon Mill and Matfen are all brilliantly located for ease of access. There are sprawling country hotels with lush green golf courses and quaint cottages on working farms; hill-top houses with stunning views of Northumberland National Park, well-run caravan sites and quality pubs offering B&B to cyclists, walkers and young families alike.

From any of these locations, you can enjoy easy access to some of the Wall’s most significant sites including the iconic fort at Housesteads. Vindolanda, where there’s still a rolling programme of excavations, is just a mile or so from Bardon Mill, and Housesteads Roman Fort just a few miles further east, all accessible by the AD122 bus between Easter and September.

Market town Hexham and its pretty neighbour Corbridge each boast a number of quality B&Bs, as well as some great pub accommodation and larger hotels. They’re perfect for anyone planning to visit Corbridge Roman Town, Chesters Roman fort or Brocoliti, a temple of Mithras, but in fact all of the towns and villages around about are very handy for the Wall.

If you’re looking for a rustic Northumbrian experience, why not stay in a bothy? Northumberland boasts fours of these basic structures, which are little more than outhouses but if you’re feeling intrepid and you like the idea of truly getting back to nature, a bothy stay is as invigorating as it is memorable!

Visitors to Northumberland are drawn here by Hadrian’s Wall but also for the stunning scenery, which is perhaps why the accommodation offer is so varied and of such a high standard. Turreted castles and no-frills hostels, eco-cottages, yurts, 18th century inns and more all tempt travellers from near and far. Whatever you want from your accommodation, hospitable Northumberland will meet your needs.
