Standing proudly in the city it has dominated for nine centuries, Carlisle Castle was a constantly updated working fortress until well within living memory. Now its rich and varied visitor attractions reflect its long and eventful history. Even before the medieval castle was begun, this site was an important Roman fortress.
Today, the castle still plays a prominent role in Cumbria as one of its best-loved landmarks. With an exhibition, a programme of guided tours, beautiful medieval carvings, a dungeon, a picnic area, a unique gift shop and being so close to Hadrian’s Wall, the castle makes for a full family day out.
Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life is located inside the castle grounds. Visitors can purchase a joint ticket to both attractions.
English Heritage looks after numerous sites along Hadrian’s Wall, such as Birdoswald Roman Fort, Housesteads Roman Fort & Museum, Chesters Roman Fort & Museum and Corbridge Roman Town, along with Belsay Hall and Lanercost Priory. If you would like to visit multiple English Heritage sites, you can purchase either a temporary Overseas Visitor Pass or an Annual Membership.
