With a heritage closely connected to the sea, Maryport played an important part in Roman Britain. The natural harbour and sea defences made it a perfect location for a Roman fort; Aluana. A series of milefortlets, turrets and Roman roads connected Aluana with the rest of the Frontier and Hadrian’s Wall. The Senhouse Roman Museum houses the largest collection of Roman military altar stones in Britain and most of the collection was found in or around Maryport; look out for special events and excavations.
Traditional industries such as coal mining, ship building and shipping shaped the town’s important maritime heritage and the Georgian architecture in the town reflects the industrial successes. Thomas Henry Ismay, owner of the White Star Line (which built the Titanic) was born in Maryport, and the town also has connections to the Hine Brothers who founded the Holme Shipping Line, and the Ritsons who constructed the first iron ships at Maryport. Today the town has an attractive working harbour and marina, and family friendly attractions like the Lake District Coast Aquarium and ‘Clip ‘n’ Climb’ (opening May 2013). There is also a contemporary entertainment venue, the Wave Centre, and a lively events programme including the popular Maryport Blues Festival.
