Wild wellness along Hadrian’s Wall

If you’re planning an autumn trip to Hadrian’s Wall, it’s worth knowing there’s a small but growing scene of ‘wild wellness’ stays along the route: accommodation with features such as wood-fired hot tubs, outdoor saunas and plunge baths. We’ve added standalone lake/beach saunas at the eastern end.

The wild wellness stays are mostly set on farms and in shepherd’s huts, which sit in the landscape beautifully. They’re a great choice for stargazing. Here are some suggestions, roughly west to east.

West end: Solway Firth and Cumbria

Wallsend Guest House and Glamping Pods sits in the village of Bowness-on-Solway, right at the western end of the Hadrian’s Wall Path, with a handful of ensuite pods and a choice of two or four-person log-burner hot tubs outside. It’s a proper Solway Coast setting, close to the Campfield Marsh nature reserve, with a local pub a five-minute walk away.

Herdie Hideaway is a shepherd’s hut on a working farm looking out over the Solway Firth, surrounded by woodland with plenty of wildlife around. It’s quiet in the way you’d hope, no real neighbours, just the hut and the view.

Central section of Hadrian’s Wall

The central stretch of the Wall, around Housesteads, Vindolanda, Steel Rigg and the old Sycamore Gap site, falls inside a Dark Sky Park.

Chishillway Shepherd’s Hut, North Tyne Valley A wood-fired hot tub a couple of miles from the Wall, on a farm with sheep and Aberdeen Angus cattle around. Corbridge and Hexham are about 10 miles away. There’s a wood-burner inside too.

The Hiddle Hut, Bardon Mill
A luxury hut about two miles from the Wall. The Hiddle Hut has a private outdoor sauna and an ice-cold plunge tub next to it, plus a big reclaimed bathtub by the window. It’s a two-storey cabin with a stargazing window built into the roof, so even the bed has a view of the sky.

Hadrian’s Wall Huts, Steel Rigg
Won an award in 2025 for most tranquil rural retreat in Northumberland and it’s easy to see why given it’s a short walk from Steel Rigg, Vindolanda and The Sill. There’s a two-person outdoor sauna and an outdoor cold shower for guests, plus a fire pit.

Herding Hill Farm, near Haltwhistle
A well-known camping and glamping site about a mile from the Wall with a range of accommodation options. These include adult-only Castle Pods for two with hot tubs, wood-burning stoves and private decking.

SAUNA SESSIONS

Near Newcastle

Northumbrian Sauna, Higham Lakes, near Ponteland
Sauna and dip sessions by the lake, run by sauna master Fenwick Ridley.

East End: Tynemouth and South Shields

Tynemouth and South Shields sit near the Roman site of Segedenum, which was a supply fort at the mouth of the River Tyne. Over the last few years, a beach sauna scene has built up along this coast – perfect for anyone who has walked the Hadrian’s Wall Path west to east.

Two wood-fired saunas set up on the promenade at the south end of Longsands, close enoughhe tide comes right up at high water. You heat up in the sauna, then walk straight into the sea. No plunge pool needed when you’ve got the North Sea right there.
