If you’re looking for an easy yet rewarding hike, we’ve selected three scenic routes, each around three miles long, that are perfect for beginners. Whether you prefer coastal views, peaceful riverside paths, or charming village trails, these beginner-friendly walks offer a fantastic introduction to the region’s natural beauty and Roman heritage.

BEGINNER-FRIENDLY WALKS
1. DALSTON CIRCULAR WALK
Distance: 3 miles
Terrain: Mix of pavements, riverside trails, and open fields (some areas can be muddy)
Refreshments: The Blue Bell Inn , Bridge End Inn , The Country Kitchen Café , Dalston Fryer
Start at Dalston Station and head into the village, passing the historic St Michael’s Church. Walk through the green, following the River Caldew, once vital for the town’s textile mills. Cross three bridges and pass Cowen’s Mill, a reminder of Dalston’s industrial past. Follow the path over a sandstone bridge, returning to Dalston Square, where you can grab a bite before heading back to the station.
2. MARYPORT CIRCULAR WALK
Distance: 3 miles
Terrain: Mostly level with optional steps
Refreshments: Annabell’s Tea Room , The Harbourside Cafe , Redby Cafe
From Maryport Station, head to Senhouse Street, a great spot for shops and cafés. Pass the Maritime Museum and cross the bridge towards the harbour, once a key Roman port. Visit the Senhouse Roman Museum, home to one of Britain’s best collections of Roman altars. Walk along Solway Terrace and The Promenade, taking in coastal views before returning to the station.
3. ST BEES CIRCULAR WALK
Distance: 3 miles
Terrain: Some steep inclines along cliffs
Refreshments: The Priory Restaurant & Bar ,Hartleys
From St Bees Station, follow Main Street past the historic St Bees Priory. Walk through the Sea Mill foreshore, where medieval monks once fished. Follow the cliffside trail with breathtaking views of St Bees Head, home to England’s only cliff-nesting seabird colony outside the south coast. Descend near the Seacote Hotel and return through the village to the station.
